Ask me anything

I believe that sometimes thinking out loud is the Universe's greatest gift to humanity. I like to believe that I am a writer, thinker, wishing on a million universes twenty something year old. I love photography and want to get better at it. I love performing arts and want to thrive in it. Next step is loving the pit stops that follow loving your silly little dreams, right?!
Yes. Yes. YES ALL THE WAY!!!!!!

You may recall Nancy Upton, the clever plus-size gal who ironically entered herself in America Apparel’s “The Next Big Thing” modeling contest. In her entry, Nancy submitted pictures of herself nearly naked, alternatively covered with/chowing down on all sorts of fatty foods. Her submission stated simply, “I’m a size 12. I just can’t stop eating.”
Nancy took her submission seriously, in that she was serious about showing how offensive the retailer’s contest (which called for fans of “full-sized fannies” and “booty-ful” models) was to plus-size women.
So we were surprised and pleased to find out via The Frisky on Friday that Upton actually won the contest, which was decided by online votes.

It is day 10 of the protests on Wall Street, where hundreds of demonstrators have gathered to speak out against the bank bailout, Troy Davis’ execution, and corporate greed. More than 80 protesters from the nebulous campaign called Occupy Wall Street were arrested this weekend. Here are some images from the streets.

Hiding and Seeking

It’s been a while since I’ve seen your face

and kept it in my mind.

I chase the dreams we had of this place

and search that your heart is what I find.

Losing grip to sounds and light,

I wonder if you hear my pulse beat.

As it races and faces your mighty height

As we wander in heated defeat.

Lost, hand in hand-

I hide my vision from your eyes.

As we whisper secretly misfortunes we withstand-

And you and I gaze up at the sky.

Hoping one day our dreams, like wings, take hold of us again

But until then….

32 Pictures Of Police Brutality From Occupy Wall Street Protests

This needs WAY more notes. BTW, I’d say it’s about time to prepare for our own riots. It was only a matter of time and we’re getting dangerously close to the breaking point.

Dreams or Something like it.

Sometimes dreams have a habit of getting away from you. One moment they’re in your head, churning around as they try to give themselves a name, a face, or sense of belonging. Some dreams you have leave you feeling cold, hot, in between, and sometimes like nothing.

Having moved to New York, I’ve come to realize that there are many dreams that I have had that have chipped, and faded away in my line of vision as a result from the bright lights of downtown blaring at night. Or have been drowned to silence and only pop up when the creaking wheels of the subway trains rumbles down the tunnel trying to get you to a destination you sometimes need a map to get to or just your plain old feet. It’s really amazing how so many dreams of ours get forgotten, lost, or burn up in flames that take over us or take us down. And only get conjured up like magic when we shutter our eyes at the brightness of the lights and shimmer in the darkness of the city.

Let’s just say I love New York. I remembered that I had forgotten how to dream.

You might think Gia would’ve gotten a lot of shit growing up in Chicago, given that she was born a he named Neco. But even though she’s been wearing girl clothes since high school, the gangbangers on the corners in her neighborhood leave Gia alone. The frat boys she hangs out with at college don’t suspect a thing, either. It’s her competitors in Chicago’s infamous drag ball scene that she has to watch out for (if you don’t know what that is, this should get you up to speed).
Gia goes to straight clubs as Gia, too. If a guy hits on her, she tells them: “I’m not what you think I am. I’ve got the same things you’ve got between your legs.” One guy told her, “You’re still a badass bitch.”

Under-Reported Story of the Week: Protests in Chile. The protests have been about a wide range of issues with the government but have centered around and been dominated by student protests about education issues. Thousands at a time have been marching through the streets of the capital of Santiago and in other cities throughout the country in recent days. The primary demand of the student protesters is a free public education system for all in Chile. They are joined by parents, teachers, and regular members of the community.

Yesterday, students of the Metropolitan Technological University in Santiago set up a flaming street barricade and clashed with police. In past days, the number arrested is nearly 1000. A BBC article calls these demonstrations, especially the night-time cacerolazos (“saucepan protests”) reminiscent of pro-democracy protests against General Pinochet in the 80s.

Today, the students received a verbal chiding from President Sebastian Pinera as he signed into law a bill meant to appease them.

We all want education, healthcare, and many more things for free, but I want to remind them that nothing is free in this life. Someone has to pay.

Opposition to Pinera, the first conservative president since Pinochet left power, is growing. Unions representing public sector workers and copper miners have vowed to join the students. His popularity is dropping with the protests in the past months, reaching an all-time low of 26% in a poll published last week. That’s the lowest rating for a Chilean president since 1990.

A protest against the Santiago mayor is being organized for August 16th and another massive protest also in Santiago for September 3rd. Organizers are hoping to draw half a million people.
